My kids are definitely getting older.
Common sense and social media have led me to believe that this process would be harder than it’s been thus far.
I’ve been excited to see my boys growing up.
Francis just started high school a few months back and is adjusting well to life in Queens, taking the subway and gaining some independence. Eoin is in his (and our family’s) last year at our local elementary school and we recently went to a middle school open house.
I think part of my excitement comes from the fact that so far the experiment seems to be successful. They’ll be more parenting challenges ahead but 14 years in, I think Kate and I have done a damn good job.
But today is different.
Today is Halloween, one of my favorite days with the boys. our town is a world class trick-or-treating spot and we always had a good time walking the village, drink in hand watching the boys love Halloween. However my favorite part was something that I did with just them.
After coming home from a few hours of trick-or-treating, emptying our bags and taking a quick break I would take the boys out one more time. At that point, it was dark and almost all the other trick-or-treaters had gone home. We went out to hit one more block and in the quiet of otherwise loud day, it was just us.
By the time last year came, I knew those trips might be fleeting, and this year they were. The boys went off with their friends. I probaly could’ve gone out with Eoin one more time, but he was excited for a little freedom so I stayed back and worked our door (full size house this year…legit)
It was sad, no doubt.
It’s also the current state of being a dad. I miss the young ones but am excited to see the things the older ones do.
Anyway be sure to take pictures of all this stuff. I'm gonna go look at these and bury my feelings in candy.
